Tumor: An abnormal mass of tissue. Tumors are a classic sign of inflammation, and can be benign or malignant (cancerous). There are dozens of different types of tumors.
According to the National Cancer Institute of U.S.A., cancer is "a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control." Typically cancer occurs in the form of a tumor , but some cancers, like leukemia , occur inside the blood or the organs formed by blood.
The cancer treatment method include surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy etc., and the last one is very important in clinic. Normal chemotherapy works by stopping or slowing the growth of cancer cells, which grow and divide quickly. But it can also harm healthy cells and may cause broad and serious side effects because of the low selectivity. Otherwise, the drug resistance is also a problem. In recent years, the combination drug therapy improved the curative effect and reduced the side effects and drug resistance markedly. The mechanism of anti-tumor drug include:
- Influence the biosynthesis of DNA&RNA.
- Destroy DNA and stop its copy
- Interfere with the transcription and stop RNA synthesis
- Influence the protein synthesis
- Influence the balance of hormone
In recent years, the molecular-targeted agents developed rapidly with the progress of molecular biology on tumor research. The molecular-targeted therapy can damage the cancer cells only and avoid the harm to normal tissue with high selectivity, which is regarded as one of the best ways on cancer treatment. |
